You know you are a bookworm when outings are often skipped and midnight oil is burnt on a weekday to read 'one last chapter.' You may feel that there's nothing that can replace the feeling of sitting on a couch and staying engrossed in your favourite novel for hours at a stretch. While we agree with that, we have created a list of apps for the reader in you. These shall prove to be useful when you are out and about. So, check out our list and don't frown the next time you are forced to leave your book behind.

Goodreads :

Goodreads has been our personal favourite for a very long time. We feel that it is the go-to website for anyone who loves to read. Goodreads is a social networking platform for book lovers and has a massive user base of  35 million members .You can get started by creating a virtual bookshelf of the books that you have read and building a 'to-be-read' list of books. We find the app very useful when we want to look up information and reviews of various books. Note that these reviews are written by other avid readers who spend hours with their books, so you may actually want to take their word on it. Also, the app has bar-code scanning that lets you add books to your bookshelf and also enables you to look up information on it.



Amazon Kindle : 

If you are an avid reader, you would love to have the Amazon Kindle app on your phone. The Kindle app has books from a number of genres including action & adventure, business & economics, history, politics, travel, religion, fantasy, horror & science fiction, and many more. It also offers a number of newspapers and magazines that you can choose from. The app has a collection of both free e-books, and the ones you would have pay for. The best thing we like about the app is it can be synced across all devices, so you can read on tablet, smartphone or even a laptop.



Pocket : 

Do you often find yourself reading when you are supposed to be doing something else? Pocket will be useful to you then. Next time you are forced to stop reading an interesting article on the web, you can save it in the Pocket and read it later. Do remember to adjust the settings so that it can be read in offline mode too.



Instapaper : 

Instapaper is similar to Pocket, but then we have our reasons for liking it. You can read saved web pages in offline mode with Instapaper, but because of re-formatted text and easy-to-read layout, the experience is better than Pocket


Google Play Books : 

On Google Play Books, you'll find millions of books to choose from. You can buy them and read them even when you are offline. There is also an option of bookmarking pages and adding highlights to text of the book you are reading. Google Play books also gives users an option to customize reading experience by offering a number of fonts and layouts to choose from.

Dictionary & Thesaurus : 

This one is obvious, but we'll mention it anyway. If you are an avid reader, then you wouldn't ever underestimate the importance of a dictionary. And personally, we love Dictionary.com's app. It comes with a Thesaurus and also has a one-word a day feature that can really improve one's vocabulary. Also, it has a great crossword puzzle that is updated daily.

Comixology : 

We had to include this one, only because it promises something different. If books are not your cup of tea, but you really enjoy comics, then Comixology is the app for you. As the name suggests, it has a huge library or either free or cheap comics and graphic novels. Although the experience is digital, it is as close as it gets to actually reading a comic.

Audiobooks from Audible :

Ever thought of someone reading out your favourite book to you? Audible does exactly that. So, if you are busy and still want to enjoy your favourite book, you now know how you can. Also, we feel that this feature makes Audible a great app for those who are visually impaired or have trouble reading.

Reliance Games partners with WWE to launch WWE Mayhem on iOS and Android

Global developer of free-to-play mobile games, Reliance Games has partnered with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to launch 'WWE Mayhem' over-the-top, arcade-style action game that features WWE superstars and legends.

Available now, WWE Mayhem can be downloaded free on iOS devices via the App Store and Android smartphones and tablets through Google Play.

"With a spectacular roster of some of the best champions to ever enter the ring, WWE Mayhem lets fans decide which WWE legends and superstars are truly the greatest of all time," Amit Khanduja, CEO, Reliance Entertainment, Digital, said in a statement.

WWE Mayhem will offer an enhanced gameplay experience by allowing players to unlock unique content when used in conjunction with Mattel's WWE Retro Figures.

Players who have the WWE Retro Figures will be able to scan their figure within the game to unlock WWE superstars.

"WWE Mayhem captures all the energy, excitement and emotion of WWE's live action in a mobile experience that any fan can enjoy," added Casey Collins, WWE Executive Vice President, Consumer Products.

Facebook to use its News Feed to push more videos to users

FACEBOOK:-Facebook Inc said on Thursday it would begin to promote videos more prominently inside its News Feed, leveraging the social network’s centerpiece product to build interest in episodic shows and compete more directly with YouTube.
Facebook, in a blog post, also said it was tweaking the kinds of advertisements that run in videos on the network.

Facebook’s News Feed, which comprises posts from friends and businesses, is the first thing its 2.1 billion users see when they open the mobile app or go to the website, making it valuable online real estate.

A complex ranking system determines which posts people see first, and last year, Facebook released a statement of “News Feed values” emphasizing that posts from friends and family would come first.

Facebook, though, is investing more money in video. In August it created a video service, called Watch, initially with shows from the likes of Vox and Discovery Communications Inc but with plans to let people submit shows as they do on Alphabet Inc’s YouTube.

With the update, people in the News Feed are more likely to see videos that Facebook thinks they want to watch, based on their search history and pages they have liked. They will also see new episodes of a show if they watched an earlier episode.

“Engaging one-off videos that bring friends and communities together have always done well in News Feed and will continue to do so,” the company said in the blog post.

Though Facebook’s revenue is growing quickly and the number of users worldwide is still rising, the company is struggling to keep people spending time on the site and sees video as a possible answer, Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Wieser said.

“They see that YouTube is still growing, rapidly. Facebook is not. So you can make the argument that they’re trying to increase total time spent,” Wieser said in an interview.

One advertising change announced by Facebook could also increase time spent. In its blog post, Facebook said it would no longer allow ads in the middle of videos unless the videos are at least three minutes long, which Wieser said may encourage companies to produce longer videos.

Facebook also said that next year it would begin testing ads in its Watch service that run at the beginning of videos, known as pre-roll ads, something the company previously avoided.

NEW DELHI: At least half of the world's population cannot obtain essential health services and each year about 100 million people, including in India, are being pushed into poverty because they have to pay for healthcare out of their own pockets.

 'Tracking Universal Health Coverage: 2017 Global Monitoring Report', a new report by the World Bank and the World Health Organization released on Wednesday has revealed that currently 800 million people spend at least 10% of their household budgets on health expenses for themselves, a sick child or other family member.

For almost 100 million, these expenses are high enough to push them into extreme poverty, forcing them to survive on $1.90 or less a day. The report looks at "catastrophic" spending on health on the basis of out-of-pocket expenditures exceeding 10% and 25% of household total income or consumption.

About one-sixth of households in India (exceeding 10% household income) and 3.9% (exceeding 25% household income) bear such spending exceeding a household's ability to pay without reimbursement by a third party. Among the Brics countries, South Africa, which spends 8.7% of GDP on health, and Russia, which has a predominantly state-funded healthcare system, had just 0.1% and 0.6% respectively, of households spending over 25% of their income on healthcare.

This figure was 0.8% in the US. China had the highest proportion (4.8%) and in Brazil it was 3.5% of households. According to the report, 808 million worldwide incur catastrophic health spending at the 10% level. Latin America and Asia have the highest rates of people with out-ofpocket expenditures exceeding 10% or 25% of total household consumption or income.

The report states that 4.2% and 4.6% households in India, based on two different poverty lines, are impoverished by spending on health. Given that there are about 24 crore households in India, that would mean around a crore households or a population of nearly 5crore being impoverished. 

In these cases, a household is forced by an adverse health event to divert spending away from things like food, shelter and clothing, to an extent that its spending on these items is reduced below the level indicated by the poverty line. The levels of health service coverage vary widely between countries. 

The Universal Health Coverage (UHC) service index is highest in East Asia (77 on the index) and Northern America and Europe (also 77). Sub-Saharan Africa has the lowest index value (42), followed by Southern Asia (53). The index is correlated with under-five mortality rates, life expectancy and the Human Development Index. 

UHC means that all people receive the health services they need, including public health services designed to promote better health, ensuring that the use of these services does not expose the user to financial hardship. Incidence of catastrophic payment has been increasing between 2000 and 2010.
