J&K: Army Major, 2 soldiers martyred in firing by Pakistan along LoC

NEW DELHI: A major and two soldiers were martyred in cross-border firing by Pakistan army at Keri in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday afternoon, even as the two countries continue to exchange heavy fire at different places along the Line of Control (LoC) on a daily basis.

An "area domination patrol" of the 2 Sikh battalion deployed in the Keri sector, under the 120 Infantry Brigade, was underway when it came under fire from Pakistan army posts at about 12.15pm. "The major and two soldiers were killed in the shelling, while another soldier was injured. Our soldiers responded effectively," said an officer.

The Army has recorded over 780 ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the 778-km LoC already this year, while the number has crossed 120 along the 198-km international border manned by BSF in J&K, marking a new high in recent times. The ceasefire violations along the LoC in 2014 and 2015 stood at 153 and 152, respectively, while the tally was 228 last year.
The Indian Army has over the last few months repeatedly told the Pakistan army to desist from actively abetting cross-border terrorism and infiltration, warning that all misadventures to either target Indian troops or provide covering fire to infiltrating terrorists would be met with retaliatory punitive fire assaults.

India has stressed that the main reason for any collateral damage in the cross-border firings is due to Pakistan army's "unacceptable" support to cross-border terrorism and infiltration as well as its strategy to deploy civilians at its forward posts to gain intelligence and act as guides to the terrorists crossing the LoC.

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Thursday resigned along with his council of ministers, a day after Governor OP Kohli dissolved the legislative assembly following the recently-concluded polls, paving the way for formation of a new government.
Rupani, accompanied by deputy chief minister Nitin Patel and other ministers visited Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar and handed over their resignation letters to the governor.

Rupani, however, would serve as the caretaker chief minister till the formation of a new government.

"Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and his entire council of ministers have tendered their resignations to Governor OP Kohli who has accepted them," Patel told reporters outside Raj Bhavan.

In the recently concluded polls, the BJP retained power by winning 99 seats in the 182-member assembly while the Congress claimed 77. Six seats went to others, including three Independents.

Meanwhile, Patel said a meeting of all the newly-elected BJP MLAs would be convened soon by state BJP unit president Jitu Vaghani to select the next chief minister.

However, he refused to assign any timeline for the meeting and formation of the next government.

He said the entire process to select the next chief minister will be carried out under the supervision of Union finance minister Arun Jaitley and BJP general secretary Saroj Pandey who have been appointed as observers by the central leadership.

"Since Parliament is in session, the party (leadership) will inform us in one or two days as to when Arun Jaitleyji and Saroj Pandeyji would come here. In their presence, MLAs would take a decision about the new chief minister," Patel added.

Though speculation is doing rounds on who will be the next chief minister, mild-mannered Rupani seems to be a front-runner and is likely to retain the job.

Sources in the BJP had said the party was likely to stick with Rupani.

BJP president Amit Shah had said during the campaign that the party was fighting the election under Rupani and Nitin Patel.

Sources had said the central leadership may also think of changing the chief minister following the narrow win of the BJP.

India, Switzerland ink deal to combat black money issue; data sharing of tax information from 1 January

New Delhi: In a move aimed at combating black money stashed abroad, India signed an agreement with Switzerland on Thursday that would allow automatic sharing of tax-related information from 1 January next year, the CBDT said.
"With the completion of the parliamentary procedure in Switzerland and signing of mutual agreement, India and Switzerland are set for automatic exchange of information for the period beginning from 1 January, 2018," the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said.

The policy-making body for the Income Tax Department said the agreement was signed by CBDT chairman Sushil Chandra and Swiss Ambassador to India Andreas Baum at the North Block.
A joint declaration for the implementation of Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) was signed last month between the two sides here and it provided that both countries would start collecting data in accordance with the global standards in 2018 and exchange it from 2019 onwards.
While Switzerland has conformed to the global standards on automatic exchange of information with the signing of the declaration, India, on its part, has promised to safeguard the confidentiality of the data.

"It will now be possible for India to receive from September 2019 onwards, the financial information of accounts held by Indian residents in Switzerland for 2018 and subsequent years, on an automatic basis," the government earlier said.
Switzerland, which has always been at the centre of the debate on black money allegedly stashed by Indians abroad, used to be known for very strong secrecy walls till a few years ago around its banking practices
A huge global pressure has resulted in Switzerland relenting on the tough secrecy clauses its local laws gave to the banks.
Official sources said that several information requests on details about Indians who had accounts in Swiss banks were still pending.
The AEOI conforms to a norm set by the global economic body The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for tax transparency.

Tiger Zinda Hai’s music album review: Second time’s the charm

Tiger Zinda Hai’s album is infinitely better than that of the series’ first instalment

At the recently held International Film Festival of India in Goa, the Best Actress award was bagged by Parvathy Thiruvoth for her role in this year’s Malayalam film Take Off, based on the story of Indian nurses held captive by ISIS in Iraq in 2014. The hard-hitting drama also won its director Mahesh Narayanan the Special Jury Award at the festival. The same incident has also inspired Tiger Zinda Hai , Ali Abbas Zafar’s sequel to Ek Tha Tiger(2012). Going by the trailer though, TZH seems to have taken a far more filmi approach to the whole story, and accordingly has a full-fledged soundtrack by Vishal (Dadlani)-Shekhar (Ravjiani), who have had a quiet year otherwise.

The composer duo use Julius Packiam’s ‘Tiger’s Theme’ from Ek Tha Tiger — which also appeared in the trailer of TZH – as the basis for ‘Swag Se Swagat’, the “swag-laden” paean to love and unity penned by Irshad Kamil. But I’m not really sure what the song’s choreography has to do with the message though. It’s an average listen that just makes the cut because of its arrangement along with Dadlani and Neha Bhasin’s vocal prowess. It’s definitely more effective than the second song that has its roots in the ‘Tiger Theme’ – ‘Zinda Hai’ that has Sukhwinder Singh and Raftaar getting behind the mic. In ‘Dil Diyan Gallan’, the composers sort of reprise a combination they employed in their previous Salman Khan project, Sultan(2016) – a folksy track with a main version sung by a Pakistani male singer and a female unplugged version. The latter in TZH is performed by Bhasin which is not as effective as ‘Jag Ghoomeya’. However, ‘Dil Diyan Gallan’ is still a pretty charming tune – in fact, the folk aspect is accentuated here as Kamil’s lyrics are in Punjabi. While Atif Aslam does a neat job of rendering the lead version of the track, like with ‘Jag Ghoomeya’, here too it is the unplugged variant that works better.

Singing for Vishal-Shekhar after a long gap, Shreya Ghoshal gets the devotional ‘Daata Tu’. The lady treats the poignant melody with a characteristically nuanced and soulful rendition, while a competent chorus supports her with some fine harmonies. The surprise shift in rhythm towards the end too is a nifty touch. The album’s best track goes to the vocal powerhouse Jyoti Nooran – a pulsating Sufi fusion piece ‘Tera Noor’. Fabulous vocals with a groovy arrangement are only highlighted by the searing guitars and drums.

Vishal-Shekhar’s only release for the year gives the Tiger series some much needed sonic reprieve.
